Fuel Efficiency

Here are some tips to help you reduce the amount of gas you use. If you are already following these tips, you are probably getting the best gas mileage your car can deliver.

  1. Drive Sensibly:
Aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. Sensible driving is also safer for you and others, so you may save more than gas money.
  2. Observe the Speed Limit:
While each vehicle reaches its optimal fuel economy at a different speed (or range of speeds), gas mileage usually decreases rapidly at speeds above 60 mph.
  3. Remove Excess Weight:
Avoid keeping unnecessary items in your vehicle, especially heavy ones.
  4. Avoid Excessive Idling:
Idling gets 0 miles per gallon. Cars with larger engines typically waste more gas at idle than do cars with smaller engines.
  5. Use Cruise Control:
Using cruise control (if equipped)on the highway helps you maintain a constant speed and, in most cases, will save gas.
  6. Use Overdrive Gears:
When you use overdrive gearing (for automatic gear box only), your car's engine speed goes down. This saves gas and reduces engine wear

Safety

The increasing number of vehicles in the country has catapulted the importance of safety, while we can't do anything about the circumstances beyond our control; here are a few tips to keep you safe.

  • Always wear seat belts as wearing seat belts decreases death by 20 to 30%
  • Always keep a fire extinguisher in the car to prevent any major mishaps caused due to fire.
  • Don't use the air conditioner when you are stuck in a flood situation
  • Don't roll up the windows if you are stuck in a flood situation as power windows might get jammed.
  • It is handy to keep a small hammer in the car to break the glasses to exit when necessary.
  • Always maintain correct tyre pressure as it will help in effective braking.
  • Follow lane while driving and avoiding jumping lanes. Always stick to the lane assigned to you and stay within the speed limits.
  • Always look for road signs and give due importance to them.
  • Don't sound your horn unnecessarily as it causes air pollution.
  • Don't accelerate while you are pulling out a parked car, always look for other vehicles in the rear view mirror and then move forward slowly.
  • Use indicators while turning the vehicle left or right, be extra careful while cutting lanes and put the indicators on at least 30 meters before turning.
  • Be extra careful while reversing and look for pedestrians and other obstacles.
  • Overtake when it's absolutely necessary and keep optimum distance from the vehicle which you are trying to overtake. Don't speed past a bus which has just stopped to disembark passengers as people trying to cross the road will be blinded due to the stationary vehicle.
  • Don't stop abruptly; slow down before stopping to give enough warning to the vehicles behind you.
  • While driving on the highways make sure you maintain proper distances from heavy vehicles as they might not be able to stop at a short notice.

Ecology

Driving economically leaves a lighter ecological footprint on Earth, and driving with an eye toward ecology returns the bonus of economy.

  1. Gently accelerate before hills
  2. Lift off throttle just before cresting a hill - As described in the previous technique, use inertia to your advantage
  3. Coast down hills and slight grades - This is sort of the reverse of building momentum to go up a hill. Whenever you get the chance, let gravity naturally drag you and your car down every hill.
  4. Brake only when necessary - Eliminate wasted fuel from re-accelerating.
  5. Slow before entering a curve - rarely, if ever, apply the brakes to set-up for entry into a curve in the road. Instead, let friction slow you down.
  6. Anticipate traffic flow and traffic signals
  7. Yield the right of way to aggressive drivers
  8. Don't drive while hungry, angry or tired. These conditions/emotions don't exactly promote patience and gentleness.
